What Is Raw Brass?
Raw brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, prized for its warm golden tone and organic, handcrafted feel. Unlike gold-plated or lacquered metals, raw brass has no protective coating — which means it interacts directly with air, moisture, and skin. This gives it a living quality: it changes, develops character, and tells the story of being worn.
At SosyGallery, our brass pieces — from brass ear cuffs to statement chain earrings — are handcrafted from raw brass, each one shaped by hand.
Understanding Patina
Over time, raw brass naturally darkens and develops a patina — a surface layer that forms as the metal reacts with oxygen and skin oils. This is completely normal and not a sign of damage. Many people love the aged, antique warmth of a patinated brass piece. Others prefer to keep their jewelry bright and golden. Both are valid — and both are easy to achieve at home.
How to Clean Raw Brass at Home
Method 1: Lemon Juice & Salt (Best for Restoring Shine)
This is one of the most effective natural methods for raw brass:
- Mix a few drops of fresh lemon juice with a pinch of salt.
- Apply to the brass with a soft cloth and rub gently.
- Rinse thoroughly with water.
- Dry completely with a soft cloth immediately.
The mild acidity of the lemon dissolves tarnish and oxidation, while the salt provides gentle abrasion. Results are almost instant.
Method 2: Baking Soda & Lemon Juice
Mix baking soda with a few drops of lemon juice to form a paste. Apply gently with a soft cloth or soft toothbrush — great for reaching detailed or textured areas. Rinse well and dry immediately. No lemon juice? Baking soda with a little water works well too.
Method 3: Mild Soap & Warm Water (For Light Cleaning)
For everyday dirt and oils, mild soap and lukewarm water is all you need. Gently clean with a soft cloth, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely. Never leave brass to air dry — water spots can form and accelerate tarnishing.
Method 4: Ketchup (Yes, Really!)
The mild acidity in ketchup makes it a surprisingly effective brass cleaner. Apply a small amount to the surface, leave for 5–10 minutes, rub gently with a soft cloth, then rinse and dry thoroughly. It works especially well on larger, flatter surfaces.
Care Tips
- Remove before swimming. Both sea water and chlorinated pools can accelerate patina and cause uneven discoloration — take your brass pieces off before getting in the water.
- Avoid perfume and lotions. Apply these before putting on your jewelry, not after.
- Dry thoroughly after any contact with water or sweat.
- Store in an airtight pouch to slow the natural patina process when you're not wearing the piece.
- Keep pieces separate to avoid scratching against other metals.
Embracing the Patina
If you love the aged look, simply wear your brass jewelry and let it evolve naturally. The patina that develops is unique to you — shaped by your skin chemistry, your lifestyle, and time. Pieces like our Stackable Brass Cuff Bracelets and Crescent Hoop Earrings develop a particularly beautiful warmth over time.
